SpaceChem creator Zach Barth talks mosquito nets, necrobots and upcoming game, Ironclad Tactics

What if I told you the next game Zachtronics Industries is working on involves cards, civil war and robots all at the same time? Yeah, it's THAT kind of exciting and it's only made possible by the very creative and enthusiastic man behind the curtain. Head-honcho Zach Barth sits down with us and talks about what we can expect from their latest effort, Ironclad Tactics.

Zach Barth interview

Ironclad Tactics teaser trailer

Due out early 2013, Ironclad Tactics is a card-based strategy game that takes place in the Civil War era... with robots. You heard me right. The objective of the game is to dominate your opponent by throwing your soldiers into the opponent's territory, scoring points against them within various scenarios. It's effectively a game where you're scoring a robotic touchdown and that has me shivering with excitement.

Obviously Ironclad Tactics is ostensibly a humorous proposition, but while its outer-shell might lack the seriousness of a competitive card-based strategy game, it's core design is saturated with stern detail. Within are multiple factions, hundreds of unique cards and virtually limitless possibilities for approaching any kind of situation.

Desk jobs kill, man.

In my mind, indie studios that give their titles great personality and, if they can nail it, who don't take themselves seriously (but do) always fare the best. Look at games such as Plants vs. Zombies and the success it's garnered for following those guidelines. Ironclad Tactics appears to be following the same type of formula, albeit a more violent one and I think it's all the better for it.

Card-based games always draw that competitive edge out of everybody and Ironclad Tactics will be no different. In the interview, Barth speaks about balance being a central focus for the game since multiplayer is definitely a thing. To Barth, Magic: The Gathering and their offshoot game Duels of the Planeswalkers are heavy inspirations for doing things the right way.

Hide behind the large, metallic beast soldier! I know it's scary and it'll probably blow up, but do it!

Being the card-game and strategy lover I am, I really am looking forward to seeing more and playing Ironclad Tactics. If you're also interested, Barth goes into greater detail about how even more mechanics work in the game, so take a listen to the interview above!

If you have any questions for Barth and his team over at Zachtronics Industries, head on over even if it's just to wish them a hello!
